Current Employee Current Employee Mr. San Francisco

Advice to law firm management:
You can build a career here if you are an attorney and receive reasonable pay without super human expectations and DC is a great Cosmopolitan city to start out or stay in.

Pros:
Venable pays well and fairly from the beginning, plus they don't set unreasonable work and billing expectations for their employees. I liked living in Washington DC. So pay, work, and environment are all positives.

Cons:
They seem to be lacking in keeping up with technology and could improve on increasing the effectiveness of their tech resources. Also, unfortunately, like so many other firms, I witnessed support staff such as secretaries and paralegals getting unfairly treated. The lawyers were well respected but others received ill treatment.

Former Employee Former Employee Mr. San Francisco

Advice to law firm management:
This firm should consider doing the construction and other maintenance during off hours of work so employees can do their work in peace and renovations can still be done.

Pros:
This firm had a very positive and friendly atmosphere that always made me feel welcome when I came in each day. The office is pretty casual but still professional at the same time, and management treats their employees like family.

Cons:
The only issue with this firm is that it's in an older building and repairs are constantly being done which puts areas out of order. This isn't a big deal, but can be a bit annoying at times, especially when the noise interferes with your work.

The firm looks at its Summer Associate Program as an important source for associate hiring. Hence the firm has designed the program to create a factual working atmosphere for the associates who work under the supervision of experienced lawyers, guided by a strong mentoring program. A chosen team of partners and associates advise, guide and offer critiques of the work done, ensuring that the associates are exposed to more people and practice areas and get an idea of what Venable is all about.

Summer associates are expected to complete 11 to 15 assignments during the summer, and typically spend about six hours a day on billable work. Although each office has a slightly different assignment process, the firm makes sure its summer associates receive work in the practice areas that are of interest to them. Training programs cover topics like writing and negotiations, and there are also plenty of informal one-on-one trainings with attorneys they work with. Students are also provided opportunities to attend hearings, spending the day in court or sitting in on a transaction closing.

Upon the completion of each assignment, summer associates are evaluated by the assigning attorney. In addition, a partner member of the local office hiring committee meets with each summer associate for a mid-summer and end-of-summer review.

It's not all work alone, Venable endeavors to strike a balance between work and social events for the duration of the summer program. Informal dinners, happy hours, and lunches are some of the events that will allow students to get to know our attorneys. The firm currently has summer programs in its Baltimore, Los Angeles, New York, Tysons Corner and Washington, DC offices.
