Advice to law firm management:
Figure out what it takes to motivate individuals to want to stay with the firm for longer periods. Promoting people from within motivates them and saves the firm money and effort in the long run.
Pros:
The environment tends to be pleasant - you feel like you are being assessed on the quality of your work instead of how connected or experienced you are. Partners are mostly pleasant to work with and the firm has a good reputation as a conservative and skilled firm.
Cons:
Pay is not great relative to the required billable hours. Advancement potential seems limited. There seems to be a general feeling among lower-ranking individuals that this firm is simply a ""stepping-stone"" to something better, and thus, many don't feel the need to go beyond the minimum requirements.

If you work with the right attorney, you'll find yourself well cared for, with a friendly supervisor you can trust and who you know values your well-being and free time.ConsHowever, if you land a BAD attorney, your life may be absolute misery. I have heard of more than one attorney that does not respect work-life boundaries and calls/texts late into the night or on weekends or vacation time with demands, and more than a few are very 'old-fashioned' and therefore very strict about having things done a certain way (even if that way is remarkably inefficient as technologies change). The pay could be better, as well.
