Internship Opportunities with NJOPD for Law Students: Gain Real-World Experience and Excellent Training and Mentorship Opportunities
NJOPD, also known as **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., offers internship opportunities for law students year-round and statewide. This hands-on experience allows students to work closely with attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing legal representation to indigent individuals. The internships are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters, with application deadlines of July 31st for fall, November 30th for spring, and April 15th for summer.
About NJOPD
NJOPD is a leading organization that provides first class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. The organization handles a variety of cases, including criminal offenses, allegations of abuse and neglect, involuntary psychiatric commitments, Megan's Law tier classification, and post-conviction relief. NJOPD also represents clients in Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program matters, as well as through their Forensic Science Unit.
Internship Duties and Responsibilities
Interns work closely with attorneys and staff on case preparation, litigation, and ongoing and/or systemic projects related to the representation of NJOPD clients. This includes conducting legal research and analysis, drafting motions, briefs, and memoranda, assisting with trial preparation, participating in client and witness interviews, observing and appearing in courtroom proceedings, and attending training programs. Law students who have completed two years of law school may also have the opportunity to appear in court under the supervision of NJOPD attorneys.
Eligibility and Application Process
NJOPD is looking for motivated and dedicated law students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in the legal field. To apply, interested students must submit a cover letter, resume, and writing sample (for law students only) to the Internship Coordinator, Dana Lane, at ****. The cover letter should explain why the student is seeking an internship with NJOPD, their practice areas of interest, any geographic preferences or limitations, and their availability including start/end date, number of hours, and schedule.
Applications are considered on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st for fall internships, between October 15th and November 30th for spring internships, and between December 15th and April 15th for summer internships. In addition to the application materials, all applicants must also be interviewed by the regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
