Job Responsibilities

The Fall 2025 SEC Scholars Legal Program is designed for JD and . students who are currently enrolled in an accredited law school. Participants will engage in volunteer legal operations within the organization, specifically in the Office of Commissioner Crenshaw. The program spans at least ten weeks, with tentative start dates of August 25, 2025, and September 8, 2025. The legal scholars will work closely with the organization's staff on a variety of projects and assignments that reflect the broad scope of the Commission’s work. This includes supporting litigation, assisting in drafting new regulations, and participating in reviews, exams, or public outreach initiatives.

Interns will be assigned to different divisions and offices within the headquarters, and their work schedule will be determined based on their academic course load and the needs of the division/office. Participants are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per week. The divisions and offices seeking volunteers include but are not limited to:

Education and Experience Information

Eligibility for this internship requires enrollment in a JD or . program at an accredited law school, with at least half-time enrollment status as defined by the educational institution. Applicants must possess a cumulative GPA of or higher on a scale. The program is open to students with a planned graduation date no earlier than December 2025. Proof of enrollment at an accredited law school must be provided at the time of application and by the selection date.

The program also requires the submission of transcripts or other documentation to support educational claims. If education was completed in foreign colleges or universities, the education credentials must be evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpreting foreign education programs to determine equivalency with . education standards.

Salary Information

This is a volunteer position, and as such, it does not offer a salary or compensation. Under 5 . 3111, student volunteers are not considered Federal employees for purposes other than injury compensation and law related to the Tort Claims Act. Service is not creditable for leave or any other employee benefits, although a transportation subsidy to and from the assigned duty station may be available. Selectees are ineligible for health benefits, life insurance, retirement (including the Thrift Savings Plan), and long-term care insurance. The appointment does not confer eligibility for conversion to a term, career, or career-conditional appointment in the competitive service.

Additional Information

Applicants must be . citizens and at least 16 years of age. The program does not authorize moving or relocation expenses. The position is not part of a collective bargaining unit, and relatives of an organization employee may not work directly in their chain of command.

A background investigation is required for entrance on duty, and favorable results are a condition of employment. The program may be subject to drug testing requirements. Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for the Selective Service.
