NJOPD offers hands-on internship opportunities for college and graduate students seeking practical experience in the legal field. As an intern with NJOPD, you will work closely with attorneys, investigators, and staff to provide top-notch legal representation to indigent clients. Our internships offer a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in a variety of legal areas and receive excellent training and mentorship.

Internship Opportunities:
- College juniors and seniors and graduate students are welcome to apply
- Investigator interns assist with tasks such as locating and interviewing witnesses, serving subpoenas, and conducting field investigations
- Graduate students in social work can apply for internships in specialized units such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy
- Paralegal students can also apply for internships with NJOPD
To Apply:
- Submit a cover letter explaining your interest in an internship with NJOPD, including your practice areas of interest, geographic preferences or limitations, and availability
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st (Fall), between October 15th and November 30th (Spring), and between December 15th and April 15th (Summer)
- All applicants must be interviewed by regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved prior to being offered an internship with NJOPD
About NJOPD:
- First-class legal representation for indigent individuals at the trial and appellate levels
- Representation in criminal cases, parental representation, law guardian representation, mental health advocacy, Megan's Law hearings, and post-conviction relief
- Opportunities to work in specialized units such as Recovery Court and Intensive Supervision Program, and our Forensic Science Unit
