Responsibilities:
- Collect and analyze evidence of employee misconduct and unfitness for job duties
- Draft disciplinary charges and summaries
- Prepare cases for trial and argue them at hearings and administrative bodies
- Conduct legal research and prepare briefs and memoranda
- Assist in evaluating employment candidates for the HRS department
- Investigate and respond to charges of discrimination
- Attend arbitrations and act as liaison with the New York City Office of Labor Relations
- Collaborate with other DSS divisions and program areas
- Advise on legal aspects of enforcement and administration of acts, rules, laws, and regulations
Requirements:

The Employment Law Unit within the Office of Legal Affairs provides litigation and counseling services throughout the organization with regards to employment and labor issues. This includes prosecuting employee disciplinary and fitness hearings, handling appeals, serving as counsel to the HRS department, and representing the organization at equal employment opportunity hearings and trials. The unit also responds to records access requests and conducts employment background checks.
The organization is looking for a candidate who can work under the close supervision of a senior attorney, with some independence in decision-making. The candidate should possess strong analytical abilities and the ability to multitask and work under pressure and deadlines. The candidate should also have a background in employment law and experience with litigation and oral argument. Strong research and writing skills are a must for this position.
