This internship program provides students with hands-on experience in the field of criminal justice and legal proceedings.
Undergraduate interns will have the opportunity to work with Detectives and gain exposure to a variety of investigative aspects for the interdiction and prosecution of violations of criminal law. This experience will enhance their studies in Criminal Justice or related forensic or technical fields of study. Law interns will have the opportunity to work with Deputy Attorneys General and gain exposure to a variety of substantive areas of New Jersey criminal law. They are expected to have excellent legal research and writing skills. All interns are expected to have outstanding interpersonal communication skills.
Interns will be supervised by a Detective or a Deputy Attorney General, with an Assistant Attorney General providing overall supervision of the program. They will also have the opportunity to observe and work with Detectives and Deputy Attorneys General in the course of their normal job duties, including appearances before the Law Division (Criminal Part), Appellate Division, and occasionally, the New Jersey Supreme Court.
In addition to their assigned duties and responsibilities, interns will also have the opportunity to attend the Summer Intern Brown Bag Lunch Program, where they can learn from experienced professionals in the field and gain valuable insights into investigations, substantive law, and litigation techniques. This program is typically held at the Hughes Justice Complex in Trenton.
To apply for the internship program, undergraduate or law students are required to submit a completed Internship Application, cover letter, resume, and most recent official transcript (law students should also submit a legal writing sample). Applicants can express their interest in any of the various Bureaus within the Division as well as any geographical preferences. While efforts will be made to accommodate these interests, no particular assignment is guaranteed.
