Job Description:
The General Litigation Division (GLD) handles a wide range of cases, with a strong focus on constitutional and civil rights litigation, employment litigation, and matters that have a significant impact on the lives of Texans. As an Assistant Attorney General IV, you will work on a variety of cases, from individual civil rights claims to complex institutional reform litigation, class actions, and public policy matters. This role also offers the opportunity to independently manage a dynamic docket, providing ample opportunities to guide clients to successful resolutions or take cases to trial as a first chair attorney. AAG IVs also play critical roles on larger teams handling complex and important matters for the State.
Responsibilities:
- Represent state agencies and officials in defense of lawsuits involving civil rights, retaliation, employment, constitutionality of state statutes, and more in both state and federal court
- Handle other proceedings not managed by other civil litigation divisions, including lawsuits brought on behalf of the State and its agencies to protect Texas's sovereign and legal rights
- Conduct investigations, perform legal research, and prepare complex motions and legal documents
- Prepare and try cases in state and federal courts on behalf of state agencies and employees
- Provide legal advice and counsel to state agencies as assigned
- Perform analyses of complex factual and legal issues and develop evidence through witness interviews, depositions, and other discovery
- Prepare and file briefs in state and federal appellate courts
- Provide excellent client service and work well with other attorneys and staff in a dynamic office environment
- Attend work regularly and comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those related to ethics and integrity
- Maintain knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
- Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive information
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- . from an accredited law school
- Three years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney in Civil Litigation or a closely related field
- Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas
- In good standing with the State Bar of Texas and eligible to practice law in Texas by start date
- Knowledge of relevant laws and legal principles and practices
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Sound judgment and decision-making abilities
- Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
- Ability to work well with others in a professional office environment
- Ability to provide excellent customer service
- Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location and perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within the location
- Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
- Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
- Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
- Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 20%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exceptional academic credentials
- Law Review and/or post-graduation judicial clerkship experience
- Tried at least two jury trials to a verdict in state and/or federal district court
- Two years of litigation experience in civil rights, constitutional law, employment law, education law, or healthcare law
