Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. are tasked with a variety of responsibilities that differ based on the court division they are assigned to:
1. Supreme Court:
- Work with justices on complex cases involving intricate legal issues.
- Perform legal research and prepare written memoranda on novel legal questions.
- Assist justices in the preparation of opinions.
2. Appellate Division:
- Conduct research and analyze legal data.
- Prepare legal memoranda and process emergent motion applications.
- Proofread published opinions and edit judges' opinions.
- Prepare weekly memos for judges and handle emergent applications.
3. Superior Court (Chancery, Law Divisions, Tax Court):
- Gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings.
- Attend conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive training in mediation and mediate small claims cases.
- Summarize information for judges and assist in case management.
- Conduct legal research and draft orders and legal documents.
4. Tax Court:
- Review and process motions filed with the court.
- Conduct legal research for judges' opinions and motions.
- Draft case management orders and assist with remote proceedings.
5. Assignment Judges:
- Learn all aspects of court administration and assist with processing emergent motions.
- Conduct research, prepare legal memos, and manage judges' dockets.
6. Family Division:
- Handle cases involving children, youth, spouses, and domestic partners.
- Conduct legal research, assist with remote proceedings, and draft legal opinions and orders.
7. Civil Division:
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions and trials.
- Perform legal research and draft legal orders and correspondence.
- Manage the motion calendar and assist with case management.
8. Criminal Division:
- Conduct legal research for judges' opinions and motions.
- Assist in drafting jury instructions, legal opinions, and legal orders.
- Manage the motion calendar and conduct remote proceedings.
9. General Equity:
- Conduct legal research on substantive and procedural legal matters.
- Review case files and prepare bench memoranda.
- Draft orders and proofread judges' orders and opinions.
Education and Experience Information:
- Applicants must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a mediation course is helpful, and trial court law clerks who will serve as mediators must complete Judiciary-sponsored mediation training or its equivalent.
Salary Information:
Salaries for the 2024-2025 Court Term are based on a 52-week court term with additional overlap weeks paid separately. The salaries for the 2025-2026 Court Term are to be determined based on funding availability:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

- Approximately 480 clerkships are available, with various positions in the Supreme Court, Superior Court Appellate Division, Superior Court Assignment Judges, Superior Court Chancery Division, and Tax Court.
