The San Francisco City Attorney’s Office is proud to offer a Law School Internship Program for students currently enrolled in an accredited law school. This 10-week program, offered in the spring, summer, and fall, provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on legal experience and network with city departments.

As an intern, you will be assigned to one of our 20+ practice teams, organized by practice area. We aim to pair students with a practice team that aligns with their professional goals and interests. While we ask applicants to identify three preferred teams, we cannot guarantee placement on one of those teams. However, we strive to ensure that all interns benefit from their assignments and are fully immersed in the daily duties of the Office.

Under the guidance of deputy city attorneys, who also serve as mentors, interns will work on a variety of legal assignments. Each practice team designates an Intern Coordinator to ensure that interns are engaged in team and client interactions and receive ongoing professional feedback. Interns may have the opportunity to participate in client meetings, trials, court hearings, public meetings, and press conferences related to the Office’s work. Additionally, the Office offers events, tours, and lectures for interns to learn more about the important and unique work required of lawyers for a city like San Francisco.

The program is open to students currently enrolled in an accredited law school, with a minimum of 10 weeks of participation required to satisfy academic requirements. We offer volunteer, clinical, and work-study internships. Work-study interns must have federal work-study funds available and the City must have a current work-study contract with the intern’s law school. While the volunteer and clinical internships are unpaid, work-study interns will receive compensation according to their work-study award.
