Job Overview

A prominent law firm with a national presence is seeking a Natural Resources Associate Attorney with 1–5 years of experience to join its California team. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on complex natural resources matters involving water law, environmental compliance, permitting, and public agency issues. The ideal candidate will play a key role in high-impact projects involving litigation, regulatory counseling, and infrastructure development.

Duties

  • Handle litigation and administrative proceedings related to natural resources law

  • Advise clients on strategic water supply planning, permitting, and regulatory compliance

  • Assist with groundwater adjudications, water rights, and water utility legal issues

  • Support public agency clients on matters including Proposition 26 and Proposition 218

  • Navigate CEQA and NEPA compliance issues for a wide range of development projects

  • Participate in complex permitting processes involving federal, state, and local agencies

  • Provide due diligence for water rights transfers and infrastructure use

  • Draft legal memoranda, correspondence, and public-facing documents

  • Collaborate with clients, public officials, and internal teams on multi-jurisdictional matters

Requirements

  • 1–5 years of legal experience in natural resources or environmental law

  • Background in water rights, permitting, CEQA/NEPA, and related litigation

  • Familiarity with public agency law and California water policy frameworks

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and interact with diverse stakeholders

  • Commitment to high-quality client service and legal excellence

Education

  • Juris Doctor (.) from an accredited law school

  • Strong academic credentials required

Certifications

  • Admission to the California State Bar preferred (or eligibility to obtain)

Skills

  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills

  • Strong oral communication and public presentation abilities

  • Organized, self-motivated, and reliable under deadlines

  • Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, clients, and government officials

  • Experience in high-stakes regulatory or administrative proceedings is a plus
