**Job Title:** Attorney General’s Honors Program Participant

**Job Responsibilities:**

Participants in the Attorney General’s Honors Program will have a diverse set of responsibilities, depending on their selected issue area and division within the Office of the Attorney General. Key responsibilities include:

- Overseeing investigations and enforcement actions related to New Jersey’s laws, particularly those protecting workers' rights, including issues such as wage theft, misclassification, prevailing wage, labor trafficking, child labor, and the mistreatment of laborers.
- Rotating through one or more subject matter areas, which include Antitrust, Civil Rights, Conviction Review, Cyber Crimes, Environmental Justice and Enforcement, Fatal Police Encounters, Firearms Civil Enforcement and Accountability, Human Trafficking, Public Corruption, Reproductive Health Rights, Sexual and Domestic Violence Policy, Prevention, and Enforcement, Social Media Accountability and Data Privacy/Cybersecurity, Solicitor General Fellow, Violence Intervention and Victim Assistance, Violence Suppression and Organized Crime, and Workers’ Rights and Labor Enforcement.
- Formulating policy and legal strategy, investigating cases, drafting legal pleadings, negotiating with opposing counsel, and arguing in court or before administrative bodies.
- Participating in workshops and trainings to develop legal skills and understanding of the full range of work performed by the Attorney General’s Office.
- Potentially participating in “rotations” to different assignments in their second year of the program and working directly with the Attorney General’s Executive Leadership Team on priority programs and policy development.

**Education and Experience Information:**

Eligibility criteria for applicants include:

- Being a third-year law student, or a student in the final year of other graduate law programs (., LLM program).
- Judicial clerks who will complete their clerkship by September 2025, with the clerkship having begun immediately following graduation from law school or a fellowship program.
- Individuals completing a fellowship by September 2025, initiated immediately following graduation from law school or clerkship.
- Attorneys who do not meet these criteria may apply through the regular employment application process.

**Application Process:**

Applicants must submit an online application by 11:59 . on October 13, 2024. Required application materials include:

- A writing sample (no more than 5,000 words) containing the applicant's legal analysis.
- A statement of interest (no more than 1,000 words) explaining the applicant's interest in the Honors Program.
- A current resume.
- A scanned copy of the law school transcript.
- At least two professional references, including at least one law professor or other legal academic.

Applicants are not required to submit letters of recommendation but must identify at least two professional references.

**Selection Process:**

- Applications will be reviewed by an Honors Program selection committee consisting of senior attorneys in the Attorney General’s Office.
- Candidates will be selected based on academic achievement and scholarship, legal writing, research, and advocacy skills, demonstrated interest in public service, and leadership in school and/or community activities.
- Selected candidates will be invited to a virtual or in-person interview in Newark or Trenton in October – November 2024.
- Offers will be extended in January – February 2025, subject to successful completion of a background investigation.

**Salary Information:**

- If admitted to the New Jersey bar at the start date for employment, an Honors Program attorney will begin work as a Deputy Attorney General, with an annual salary of $93,.
- If not yet admitted to the bar, participants will be hired into a limited-term position as a “Law Clerk” at an annual salary of $59,494. Once admitted to the New Jersey bar, they will be promoted to Deputy Attorney General at an annual salary of $93,.
- All Honors Program participants are entitled to employment benefits, including health and dental insurance.

**Additional Information:**

- Participants must commit to two years of service with the Attorney General’s Office and undergo a background check before beginning employment.
- Participants must become members of the New Jersey Bar within 6 months of starting the program, which may require passing the New Jersey bar exam.
- Participants must establish New Jersey residency or obtain an exemption within 12 months of starting the program, as required under the New Jersey First Act.
