Summary:

The Legal Aid Society is seeking a Staff Attorney for their Queens Neighborhood Office's Foreclosure Prevention and Homeownership Preservation Unit. The Staff Attorney will represent homeowners in foreclosure and related actions, as well as engage in affirmative litigation to prevent the loss of homes, equity, and homelessness. The position requires a Juris Doctor and at least 3 years of experience, as well as admission to the New York State Bar. The salary range for this role is $83,844 - $147,907.

Responsibilities:

- Represent clients in state and federal court proceedings, specifically in regards to foreclosure, civil rights, consumer protection, estates administration, quiet title, and partition actions.
- Attend settlement conferences and advocate with lenders to obtain home-preserving solutions.
- Conduct client intake, including offsite and in-person appointments, and occasionally work in the evenings and weekends.
- Train, conduct community outreach, and provide education for individuals and local community-based organizations.
- Advocate with local, state, and federal agencies on behalf of clients.
- Collaborate with other organizations and groups, which may require occasional travel within New York State.
- Advocate for legislative reforms and policy changes, including continued funding for HOPP.
- Work with pro bono lawyers and partner organizations.
- Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid Society in the community.
- Promote the work of the office, the Foreclosure Prevention and Homeownership Preservation Unit, and the Civil Practice.
- Complete administrative tasks assigned by supervisor, including grant reporting.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctor and 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Admission to the New York State Bar or awaiting admission after sitting for the NYS Bar exam.
- At least 3 years of experience working with homeowners to preserve their homes and/or protect their equity preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mortgage, property, and related laws and regulations preferred.
- Knowledge of trust and estates issues is preferred.
- Litigation skills and experience preferred.
- Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and manage a high volume of cases.
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and civil legal services.
- Passion for economic justice.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $83,844 - $147,907. The Legal Aid Society also offers a generous benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, disability and life insurance, and more. The Legal Aid Society is also a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, and employees may be eligible for assistance from New York state for loan repayments.
