Opportunity Overview:
- Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is seeking applications for Assistant Public Defender (Public Defender I) positions in trial offices across the state.
- This is an entry-level position for developing attorneys, with mentorship and supervision from experienced attorneys.
- The mission of the Board is to provide relentless representation and collaborative advocacy for adults charged with felonies who cannot afford an attorney.
- BIDS is in the process of rebuilding its public defense model with a focus on interdisciplinary, community-based representation.
- Seeking dynamic, client-centered advocates who are passionate about public defense and interested in helping to transform the system.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:
- Attorneys will represent indigent adults charged with criminal felonies.
- Expected to develop trial skills and manage caseloads.
- Must be able to work respectfully with clients, colleagues, opposing counsel, and the courts.
- Applicants must demonstrate compassion for clients and a desire to zealously advocate on their behalf.
- Graduate of an accredited law school, with current license to practice law in Kansas or willingness to seek admission upon hire.
- Applications accepted from law student candidates prior to taking the bar exam.

Salary and Benefits:
- Compensation for this position starts at $62, – $65,, with potential for variation based on experience and qualifications.
