NJOPD offers an exciting opportunity for students interested in gaining real-world experience in the legal field. As a volunteer intern, you will have the chance to work alongside attorneys, investigators, and staff, providing our clients with the best possible legal representation. Our internship program offers hands-on experience in a variety of areas, including investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy, and excellent training and mentorship opportunities.
Opportunities are available year-round and statewide, giving students the chance to work in different locations and gain a diverse range of experiences. We have internship positions available for college juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students. Our investigator interns assist with a variety of tasks, including locating and interviewing witnesses, serving subpoenas, researching and gathering information and documents, conducting field investigations, and attending court proceedings and training programs.
For graduate students in fields such as social work, we offer specialized internship opportunities in units such as Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy. We also have internship positions available for paralegal students.
To apply for an internship with NJOPD, please submit a cover letter explaining why you are seeking an internship with us, your areas of interest, geographic preference or limitations, and your availability including start/end date, number of hours, and schedule. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st for the Fall semester, between October 15th and November 30th for the Spring semester, and between December 15th and April 15th for the Summer semester.
In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must go through an interview process with our regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and pass a screening before being offered an internship with NJOPD.
About the Organization
NJOPD is dedicated to providing top-quality legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our team of attorneys defends individuals charged with criminal offenses, represents individuals whose children have been removed based on allegations of abuse and neglect, children who have been removed, individuals involuntarily committed to State psychiatric facilities, those facing Megan’s Law tier classification, and individuals seeking post-conviction relief. We also have specialized units for Recovery Court, Intensive Supervision Program matters, and our Forensic Science Unit.
