Description:
Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a non-profit organization, is seeking a Staff Attorney I for their Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project (PEHP). This project aims to provide free legal services to both housed and unhoused individuals in collaboration with homeless service providers. The Staff Attorney I will be responsible for providing legal advice and limited-scope representation, as well as scheduling clients for clinic appointments and making referrals to other social services organizations when necessary.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice during daily phone clinic shifts
- Provide limited-scope representation to individuals at risk of houselessness or currently unhoused during weekly virtual clinic
- Collaborate with paralegals and attorneys to address non-housing legal issues identified during intake and assistance
- Update the PEHP intake guide as needed
- Conduct monthly Know Your Rights presentations
- Refer callers to community and legal resources when appropriate
- Write reasonable accommodation and demand letters to enforce tenant rights
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Bet Tzedek's mission of equal justice for all and core values of leadership, community-based advocacy, and innovation
- Active member of California State Bar in good standing
- Ability to work independently with case support and supervision
- Ability to balance a work schedule that requires providing both legal advice and limited-scope services
- Minimum one year experience working in non-profit legal services (preferred)
- Experience in landlord-tenant law (required)
- Familiarity with public benefits, particularly SSI and Medi-Cal (preferred)
- Familiarity with reentry law (preferred)
- Demonstrated commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in job duties
