Summary:

**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. (MFJ) is a non-profit legal services organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. MFJ is seeking a staff attorney for its Immigration Law Project to provide legal assistance in humanitarian and family-based immigration matters. The attorney will work in a dynamic environment, engaging in all aspects of lawyering from client intake to case preparation and appearing in courts and administrative agencies. The organization prioritizes the needs of low-income, disenfranchised, and disabled individuals as they strive to overcome social injustice and systemic racism.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct client intake and interviews in person, on the phone, and at community-based organizations, including evenings
• Research legal issues and draft memoranda
• Assist individuals with family- and humanitarian-based immigration applications and forms
• Represent clients at USCIS interviews, EOIR and BIA hearings, and other government offices
• Recruit, train, and mentor interns, externs, and volunteer emeritus attorneys
• Conduct community outreach, trainings, and advocacy campaigns, including evenings
• Prepare training manuals and work with advocacy groups on policy issues
• Maintain records in case management system

Requirements:

• Demonstrated interest in immigration law
• Minimum 3 years of experience in immigration court and/or immigration law representation
• Admission to the NYS bar
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Ability to balance individual caseload, mentoring, and advocacy work
• Willingness to conduct clinics and trainings throughout NYC, including evenings
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities

Preferred:

• Experience working with diverse and multi-cultural populations
• Fluency in Spanish, Chinese dialect, or other language spoken by immigrant populations in NYC
• Experience with criminal and immigration law matters
• Experience with detained docket matters in immigration court
• Experience working with victims of intimate partner violence, gender identity violence, or violence due to sexual orientation

Salary:

The salary range for this position is $76, - $96, per year, pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement with excellent fringe benefits.
