Introduction:
The Public Defender organization in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a passionate and dedicated Attorney I to join their team and make a positive impact in the community. The organization provides legal representation to clients who are unable to afford counsel, and is the largest of its kind in Maricopa County and one of the largest in the country.
Responsibilities:
- Represent clients in court when appointed by the court
- Serve as an advocate for the client's interests throughout the case
- Research facts and analyze legal issues using both computerized and printed research tools
- Compose legal documents, including motions, briefs, and correspondence
- Prepare cases for trial by interviewing witnesses, reviewing evidence, and visiting crime scenes
- Effectively communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and other professionals in the criminal justice community
- Travel to various locations for court appearances and meetings
- Contribute to the improvement of the office and indigent representation through teaching, mentoring, and serving on committees and workgroups
- Other duties as assigned, including assisting in other areas of the office as needed
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an ABA-approved law school
- Admitted to practice law and in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona prior to start date
- Must possess or obtain a valid Arizona driver's license upon hire

Working Conditions:
