About the Role
As a Homelessness Prevention Paralegal, you will work alongside our attorneys in the housing program in our Albany office. Your main responsibilities will include providing legal assistance to households at risk of homelessness, preventing evictions, securing mainstream benefits, and making referrals to services that will help them maintain permanent housing. You will work closely with clients and community partners to ensure that our clients receive the support and resources they need to stay housed.
Skills and Education
To be successful in this role, you should have an Associate's degree and 4-10 years of experience working with low-income communities or equivalent experience. You should also have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a passion for housing justice. We are looking for someone who is intelligent, hardworking, reliable, and has good judgment and attention to detail. You should also have strong communication skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively with others, and a willingness to travel and attend court, hearings, and community events.
Duties and Responsibilities
Your duties as a Homelessness Prevention Paralegal will include conducting outreach, education, and marketing, as well as screening potential clients. You will also provide intensive case management services to high-need families and assist housing attorneys in eviction representation and other administrative matters. Additionally, you will be responsible for making referrals to social services, financial assistance, and income maintenance programs and following up to help stabilize other aspects of a client's household. You will also participate in Coordinated Entry and other referral and services networks and help implement our organization's race equity priority.
Work Environment
This position operates in a professional law office environment and may occasionally require carrying office supplies. You will use standard office equipment and software, as well as remote videoconferencing platforms.
