Job Responsibilities

Supreme Court law clerks collaborate with justices on intricate cases, conducting legal research and preparing written memoranda on novel issues of law. Appellate Division clerks engage in research, legal data analysis, preparation of legal memoranda, processing of emergent motion applications, and proofreading published opinions. They are also involved in preparing weekly memos, editing opinions, and handling emergent applications.

Trial court clerks, including those in the Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions, gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings, attending conferences, and receiving training in mediation. They conduct legal research, prepare legal memos, manage motion calendars, draft legal orders, and assist with case management functions. In the Family Division, clerks handle a wide range of cases related to children, youth, spouses, and domestic partners, and work directly with judges, lawyers, and litigants.

Tax Court clerks focus on judicial tax challenges, assisting judges in processing motions, conducting legal research, drafting case management orders, and managing the motion calendar. Assignment judges' clerks learn all aspects of court administration and assist with emergent motions, conducting research, preparing legal memos, and managing dockets.

Education and Experience Information

Applicants for the law clerk positions must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association. The program is primarily intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those graduating within the last four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential, and while not mandatory, completing a course in mediation prior to the clerkship is beneficial. Selected candidates must provide an official, final law school transcript at the time of hire.

Salary Information

The salaries for the 2024-2025 Court Term are provided, with the 2025-2026 Court Term salaries to be determined based on funding availability. The current salaries are as follows:

- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900

Supplemental Information

The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule with up to four days per month of remote work. Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as per the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees. A valid New Jersey driver's license is required only if operating a vehicle is necessary for the position. US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US. Selected individuals must agree to a thorough background check, which includes fingerprinting.

Residency Law

In compliance with the "New Jersey First Act," new hires must establish and maintain principal residence in New Jersey within one year. However, law clerks are exempt from this requirement during their court term, and those serving a second clerkship in a higher court are also exempt.

Applications for the 2025-2026 court term open on June 10, 2024. Candidates must apply through the Judiciary's web-based portal and will be contacted for interviews starting June 17, 2024.
