**Job Title: Border Patrol Agent (20K to 30K BPA Recruitment Incentive)**

**Job Responsibilities:**
As a Border Patrol Agent with the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, . Border Patrol, you will play a crucial role in protecting American interests and securing the nation's borders. The primary responsibilities include:

- Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
- Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions, including the use of infrared scopes during night operations.
- Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
- Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
- Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercrafts, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles to accomplish the mission of the . Border Patrol.

**Education and Experience Information:**
To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, candidates must have one of the following:

- **Experience:** One year of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level that demonstrates the ability to take charge, make sound decisions, and maintain composure in stressful situations; the ability to learn regulations, methods, and techniques through classroom training and/or on-the-job instruction; and the ability to gather concise information through questioning, observation, and examination of documents and records.
- **Education Substitution:** A bachelor's degree or successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- **Combination of Experience and Education:** A combination of general experience and successfully completed college education.

To qualify for the GL-7 grade level, candidates must have one of the following:

- **Experience:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in law enforcement or other responsible work demonstrating the skills necessary to make sound judgments and decisions in the use of firearms, deal effectively with people in a courteous and tactful manner in connection with law enforcement matters, analyze information rapidly, and make prompt decisions.
- **Education Substitution:** A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, based on class standing, GPA of or higher, or honor society membership. Alternatively, one full year of graduate-level education in a field related to law enforcement or one year of law school from an accredited institution.
- **Combination of Experience and Education:** A combination of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level and graduate-level education in a field of study related to law enforcement.

Additional qualifications for higher grade levels (GL-9 and GS-11) may apply based on previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience.

**Salary Information:**
The salary for Border Patrol Agents is determined based on the GL-5 or GL-7 grade levels, with promotion potential to GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12. The salary range is $49,739 - $89,518 per year. A fully trained Border Patrol Agent may be eligible for an additional 25% of base pay in accordance with the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. Promotions are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of the agency. Pay rates are based on the 2025 OPM Salary Tables, which do not consider potential overtime earnings, recruitment incentives, location incentives, or yearly cost-of-living increases.

**Additional Information:**
- **Recruitment Incentive:** Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may be offered a $20,000 incentive, with the first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the academy and the remainder after completing a three-year service agreement. Agents accepting a prioritized location will be eligible for an additional $10,000.
- **Duty Locations:** Applicants will choose preferred locations from various mission-critical sites across the United States.
- **Bargaining Unit:** This position is covered under the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC).
- **Firearm Proficiency:** Carrying a firearm is required, and proficiency is part of the training provided.
- **Conditions of Employment:** Include passing a polygraph examination, formal training at the . Border Patrol Academy, meeting age and firearm requirements, and undergoing a background investigation.
- **Language Proficiency:** Proficiency in Spanish and English is required, with training provided at the academy.
- **Uniform/Grooming Standards:** Compliance with established uniform and grooming standards is mandatory.
- **Medical and Physical Requirements:** Candidates must undergo and pass a medical screening process and a physical fitness test.
- **Probationary Period:** A one-year probationary period is required during the first year of the initial permanent federal appointment.
- **Driver's License:** A valid driver's license is required.
