Job Responsibilities:
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. offers a structured 53-week clerkship program that provides law clerks with hands-on experience in a nationally recognized court environment. The responsibilities of a law clerk vary depending on the division to which they are assigned:
1. Supreme Court:
- Work with justices on complex cases involving difficult legal issues.
- Perform legal research and prepare written memoranda on novel issues of law.
- Assist the justices in the preparation of opinions.
2. Appellate Division of Superior Court:
- Conduct research and analyze legal data.
- Prepare weekly memos and legal memoranda.
- Process emergent motion applications and proofread published opinions.
- Edit opinions authored by judges and handle emergent applications.
- Assist with additional research projects and other assignments.
3. Superior Court (Assignment Judge, Chancery Division, Law Division, Tax Court):
- Gain practical experience in court administration.
- Observe judicial proceedings and attend conferences with attorneys and judges.
- Receive training in mediation and mediate small claims cases.
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions and motions in limine.
- Draft legal orders and manage the motion calendar.
- Communicate with attorneys, litigants, and court staff.
4. Tax Court:
- Review and process motions filed with the court.
- Conduct legal research and draft case management orders.
- Manage the motion calendar and assist with remote proceedings.
- Communicate with attorneys, litigants, and management office staff.
5. Family Division:
- Conduct legal research for opinions and motions.
- Assist with remote proceedings and communicate with litigants and attorneys.
- Draft legal opinions and orders and manage adjournment requests.
- Handle emergent applications.
6. Civil Division:
- Prepare bench memoranda for civil motions and trials.
- Perform legal research and draft legal orders.
- Manage the motion calendar and assist with case management functions.
- Communicate with attorneys, litigants, and court staff.
7. Criminal Division:
- Conduct legal research for opinions and motions.
- Assist in drafting jury instructions and legal opinions.
- Manage the motion calendar and perform case management functions.
- Assist with remote proceedings and communicate with attorneys and staff.
8. General Equity (Chancery):
- Conduct legal research and prepare bench memoranda.
- Draft orders and proofread judge's orders and opinions.
- Interact with counsel and litigants regarding case management.
- Assist in processing emergent temporary restraining order applications.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the law clerk position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Graduation from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their appointment as a law clerk.
- The clerkship program is intended for recent law school graduates, defined as those who have graduated within the last four years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential.
- Completion of a course in mediation is helpful but not mandatory. Selected candidates must complete a 12-hour mediation training or its equivalent if they will serve as mediators.
Salary Information:
The salaries for the 2025-2026 Court Term are yet to be determined based on funding availability. However, the salary information for the 2024-2025 Court Term is as follows:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge: $63,950
- Superior Court Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal): $58,900
- Superior Court Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
Additional Information:
- Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
- A driver's license valid in New Jersey is required if the operation of a vehicle is necessary for the position.
- US citizenship is not required, but candidates must be authorized to work in the US.
- A thorough background check, including fingerprinting, will be conducted for selected candidates.
- The "New Jersey First Act" requires newly hired Judiciary employees to establish residency in New Jersey within one year, with certain exemptions for law clerks.
- Approximately 480 clerkships are available each year, with most openings in the Superior Court Law Division and Chancery Division.
