MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) is looking for a dedicated and passionate Paralegal to join our team in Chicago, IL. As the leading non-profit Latino civil rights law firm in the nation, MALDEF has been working since 1968 to protect the civil rights of Latinos and promote their full participation in American society.

Job Title: Paralegal
Organization: MALDEF
Location: Chicago, IL
Salary: $38,000-$44,000 per year (commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda
- Conduct client interviews and oversee intake tracking system
- Review and analyze legislative developments, administrative and judicial decisions
- Interview and evaluate potential witnesses
- Maintain trial preparation and briefing materials
- Represent regional office on various outside committees
- Conduct community education and outreach
- Maintain law library
- Organize and coordinate volunteer/intern program

Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
- Legal work experience as secretary or clerk acceptable, paralegal experience preferred
- Research experience and strong writing skills required
- Bilingual Spanish/English fluency in oral communications required
- Commitment to advocacy for the Latino community
- Prior experience in civil rights related activities and issues required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Fluent in Spanish (speaking, understanding, and reading)
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other software programs
- Willingness to travel for cases, advocacy, and administrative requirements
- Experience in not-for-profit advocacy organization preferred
- Legal research experience preferred
- Proficiency in writing in Spanish desirable

Compensation:
- $38,000-$44,000 per year
