Job Description:
- Provide legal guidance, support, and representation to the Department of Social Services and all DSS program areas to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Represent the agency in state and federal courts and administrative agencies.
- Defend the agency in court actions and consult with the NYC Law Department as needed.
- Draft legal documents and prepare legal memoranda and advisory opinions.
- Conduct legal research and negotiate on behalf of the agency to obtain contracts, settlements, or judgments.
- Travel may be required for this position.
Responsibilities:
- Research legal questions and problems and interpret laws and regulations related to social services delivery.
- Draft legal documents, including pleadings, motions, agreements, and contracts.
- Represent the Commissioner in judicial proceedings and negotiate on behalf of the agency.
- Provide guidance and training to other legal staff members.
- Review case files and recommend follow-up actions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Admission to the New York State Bar.
- One year of satisfactory United States legal experience or six months of service as an Agency Attorney Interne.
- Must remain a member of the New York State Bar in good standing.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Knowledge of courtroom etiquette, family law, estate law, and civil procedure.
- Ability to articulate the law and advocate for the agency.
- Superior legal research and writing abilities.
- Prior experience as a supervisor or mentor.
