Job Responsibilities:
The internship program at the Office of the Attorney General provides law students with an opportunity to gain practical legal experience and perform meaningful work toward completing their degree. Interns will engage in various legal tasks, which may include:
- Conducting legal research and drafting memoranda.
- Assisting in the preparation of legal documents.
- Participating in case discussions and strategy meetings.
- Observing court proceedings and administrative hearings.
- Supporting attorneys in litigation processes, including state and federal courts.
- Engaging with multiple legal divisions such as Antitrust, Consumer Protection, Criminal and Capital Appeals, Civil Litigation, Complex Litigation, Civil Legal Services, Child Support Enforcement, Revenue Litigation, Ethics, Lemon Law Arbitration, Medicaid Fraud Control, Statewide Prosecution, Cyber Fraud Enforcement, and the Office of the Solicitor General.
Education and Experience Information:
The internship is open to law students enrolled in an accredited ABA law school. The program is primarily designed for law student interns and offers unpaid internships for academic credit or through participation in law school-sponsored programs. Requirements include:
- Enrollment in an accredited ABA law school.
- Ability to intern a minimum of 20 hours per week or as prescribed by the school.
- Submission of an application packet, including a résumé, a letter from an advisor or university confirming eligibility for credit or participation in a law school-sponsored program, and an official or unofficial transcript.
- 2nd and 3rd-year law students are expected to provide a writing sample if selected for an interview.
Salary Information:
The internship program is unpaid. However, law students who are not receiving academic credit are welcome to seek internship opportunities as participants in law school-sponsored programs such as Pro Bono Programs, Law School sponsored clinics, or Law School Paid Stipend programs.
Additional Information:
- Interns are required to undergo a preliminary background screening, including a criminal background check.
- The program does not offer compensation or benefits, except for Worker's Compensation benefits.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and students are encouraged to apply early.
- Interns must certify their eligibility and provide necessary documentation as part of the application process.
- Interns have the opportunity to work in various divisions, each with specific functions and responsibilities related to state and federal laws, consumer protection, civil litigation, ethics, and more.
