POSITION TITLE: NON-MINOR DEPENDENT ATTORNEY (CONTRACT)

Department: CLC 4 – Monterey Park

Reports to: Firm Director

Salary: $88,510 to $137,889 annually

Reporting to the Attorney supervisor, the NMD Attorney ’s primary responsibilities are to provide representation for NMDs (Non-Minor Dependent youth) in the Extended Foster Care (EFC) Court for our Monterey Park Office. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other staff to ensure fidelity to CLC’s core mission to provide high-quality representation to CLC clients, implement CLC policy and procedures, engage in continuous quality improvement, and further CLC’s strategic goals. This is a temporary role for a 6-month period.
Requirements

Your Impact on the Mission – Excellence in Advocacy

Represent NMD clients in the EFC Court.
Work collaboratively with County Counsel, DCFS, Court Officers, CLC attorneys, case managers, and peer advocates staffing the EFC Court.
Work closely with all members of CLCLA4, employing a holistic approach to representing the whole child to ensure clients’ needs are met.
Communicate and collaborate regularly with assigned case managers/peer advocates, and various in-house specialists regarding the status of the case and client needs.
Communicate and collaborate regularly with outside service providers, community-based organizations, and county personnel regarding status of the case and client needs.
Meet with NMD clients at court and out of court as needed and appropriate.
Ensure that NMD clients are transported to appointments or meetings.
Maintain accurate and current information and data regarding client demographics, services, needs and other case activity.
Work with the CLC Policy Director and Executive Director, when needed on legislation and policy as it relates to NMDs.
Work with the CLC Grants Manager and Development and Executive Director, when needed to ensure ongoing and expanded resources.
Provide training and consultation to case carrying CLC attorneys, case managers, peer advocates and other staff as needed.
Follow office policies and procedures as determined by the Law Firm Director.
Be available to represent minor clients when necessary due to conflicts of interest.
Continuous learning: engage in ongoing learning about evolving issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Assets You Possess/Essential Qualifications

Juris Doctor Degree and a member in good standing of the State Bar of California with at least 2 years of dependency or similar experience.
Excellent interviewing and client relationship building skills and a demonstrated commitment to representing NMDs.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
Ability to effectively communicate with other attorneys, staff, bench officers, court personnel, clients and other parties in the dependency process, service providers, and the public.
Commitment to principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
High standards of ethical and professional conduct.
A valid California driver’s license, reliable automobile, and auto insurance are required while working for the Children’s Law Center.
Competence in all areas identified in the CLC Attorney job description.
Internal Candidates: These positions are lateral moves if candidates move from another CLC firm into CLCLA4.
