Job Title: Staff Attorney - Tenant Rights Coalition
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney for the Tenant Rights Coalition at Brooklyn Legal Services is responsible for managing a high volume and diverse caseload that includes both individual and group cases. The role involves staffing and leading various workshops, trainings, and clinics, both on and off-site, and participating in team meetings and substantive trainings. The attorney will attend and support tenant meetings at buildings throughout Brooklyn, which may include some evenings and weekends. They will prepare and appear at multiple court appearances in various forums, handling all aspects of litigation from client interviews, legal research, and writing, to conducting hearings and trials. Additionally, the attorney will support local and statewide coalition spaces to help achieve larger organizing goals of community partners and tenant leaders. The role requires working well within teams of multiple stakeholders, including both legal and non-legal workers, to execute creative and complex litigation. Maintaining online case files within the office case management system to ensure compliance with various grants is also a key responsibility.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must hold a . from an accredited law school and be admitted to the New York State Bar, be eligible for reciprocal admission, or be a law graduate who has passed the New York bar exam or is registered to sit for the next bar examination. The position requires excellent advocacy, litigation, analytic, writing, and leadership skills. Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and work well within a team dynamic. There is an eagerness required to conduct community outreach, trainings, and clinics in various settings and to varied audiences, which may include some evenings and weekends. Candidates should possess flexibility and the ability to quickly adapt to changing strategies. A strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and working alongside low-income communities and communities of color to advance equity, is essential. Second language proficiency is strongly preferred.
Salary Information:
The position offers a highly competitive public interest salary, with a range from $74,882 to $135,638 USD, dependent on work history and experience.
