NJOPD offers a hands-on experience for paralegal students through their summer internship program. The program runs from June 15th to July 31st and applications are accepted on a rolling basis between December 15th and April 15th. This internship opportunity provides valuable real-world experience working with attorneys, investigators, and staff in providing legal representation to indigent individuals in New Jersey.
The NJOPD is committed to providing the best possible legal representation to their clients and their internship program reflects this dedication. Students will have the opportunity to assist with investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy, and will also have access to excellent training and mentorship opportunities.
Opportunities are available year-round and statewide, providing students with the chance to gain a comprehensive understanding of the legal system in New Jersey. This internship is open to both college juniors and seniors, as well as graduate students, and there are also specialized units for students in fields such as social work.
Internship Duties:
- Locating and interviewing witnesses
- Serving subpoenas
- Researching and gathering information and documents
- Conducting field investigations, such as photographing crime scenes and examining evidence
- Drafting reports
- Attending court proceedings and training programs

To Apply:
Interested students should submit a cover letter explaining why they are seeking an internship with NJOPD, their areas of interest, geographic preferences or limitations, and availability. Applications must be received between December 15th and April 15th for the summer internship program.
In addition to the application materials, all applicants must be interviewed by the regional office and/or Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved prior to being offered an internship with the NJOPD.
