The Underwriting Counsel position at . Horton, Inc. is a great opportunity for a licensed attorney with experience in title insurance underwriting or claims. This role offers a competitive salary range of $140,000-$150,000 annually and the chance to work for the largest homebuilder in the . with a Fortune 500 company. The Underwriting Counsel will be responsible for analyzing risk, researching, and making decisions on the insurability of titles. This position also involves interacting with agents and providing guidance on relevant statutes and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Make risk adverse, common sense underwriting decisions
- Respond to underwriting inquiries from agents in a timely manner
- Research and analyze statutes, regulations, and court rulings to determine insurability of titles
- Identify issues and apply legal principles and underwriting guidelines to make timely decisions
- Keep abreast of new or changing laws and regulations that may affect the risk of the company and communicate those effectively to agents
- Participate in the agent underwriting review process
- Support agency with recruitment and retention of agents
- Assist Claims Department with state law analysis and practices
- Create and present educational and underwriting materials for employees and agents
- Prepare bulletins, alerts, memoranda, and other communications for agents
- Conduct all business in a professional and ethical manner to serve customers and increase the goodwill and profit of the company
- Ability to travel overnight
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate Degree and license to practice law
- 3-5 years of experience with title insurance underwriting or claims
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to make presentations
- Proficiency with MS Office and email
- Ability to sit for majority of 8-hour workday and use hands and fingers to handle or feel
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment with minimal supervision
- Proficient with internet research
