Staff Attorney, Training Coordinator (Citywide Trial Offices)

The Legal Aid Society, one of the nation's oldest and most respected legal organizations, is seeking experienced criminal defense litigators for the role of Litigation Training Coordinator. This Staff Attorney position will work in partnership with the trial office leadership and the Training Unit to provide professional development and training to attorneys and core staff. The ideal candidate will have a JD and at least 9 years of New York State criminal defense practice, with significant hearing and trial litigation experience on serious felony and homicide cases. The salary range for this position is $83,844 - $147,907 and the deadline to apply is May 21, 2025 at 3:00 PM EST.

Key Responsibilities:

- Collaborate with Trial Office leadership and Supervising Attorneys to mentor fellow staff attorneys in all facets of litigation practice, particularly uncertified and limited certified attorneys
- Develop programs with other members of the Training Unit to enhance litigation skills
- Work with office and union leadership to develop second seating opportunities and promote fair and equitable felony certification processes
- Ensure that Criminal Defense Practice attorneys remain up to date on developments in the law
- Participate in centralized training and identify patterns and trends in newer attorneys' transition from training programs to practice
- Keep local attendance records for CLE programs and coordinate with centralized training and Learning and Development
- Participate in train-the-trainer programs and lead training for non-attorney and attorney staff
- Retain a partial felony caseload providing zealous representation to clients and modeling best practices to newer staff

Qualifications:

- JD and at least 9 years New York State criminal defense practice with significant hearing and trial litigation on serious felony and homicide cases
- Previous experience training, supervising, teaching or mentoring attorneys, other core defense staff and legal interns
- Comfort and facility with public speaking, and engaging presentation style and skills
- Ability to adjust to the unexpected and find solutions
- Experience preparing cross examinations for expert witnesses
- High level of organizational and administrative skills
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting
- Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $83,844 - $147,907 and The Legal Aid Society offers a generous benefits package including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance. The organization is also a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness and may be able to assist with loan repayments for New York residents.
