The FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection is responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws and trade regulation rules to protect consumers against unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices. The Bureau takes action through investigations, litigation, rulemaking, and education efforts. Each year, the Bureau hosts a summer law clerk program for second-year law students who are interested in working on consumer protection issues. The program offers a small number of highly motivated students the opportunity to work with each of the Bureau's divisions, gaining experience in areas such as advertising, enforcement, financial practices, marketing, and privacy and identity protection.
The summer law clerk program is designed to provide substantive legal work that allows law clerks to demonstrate their writing, analytical, and advocacy skills. With a small program of typically eight clerks, each law clerk is fully integrated with investigative teams and given meaningful assignments with significant responsibility. These assignments may include drafting legal documents, attending hearings and depositions, leading interview calls, and researching a wide range of legal issues. Each law clerk is also paired with an attorney mentor who can provide guidance and support throughout the summer.
The summer law clerk program is an unpaid position that typically lasts for at least eight weeks, with the possibility of up to twelve weeks.
