Position: Staff Attorney (Housing Unit)
Reports To: Program Manager
Location: 56 Bay Street, 5th Floor, Staten Island, NY 10301
What The Staff Attorney (Housing Unit) Does:
- Represents clients in court and before government agencies.
- Conducts client intake and assessment of cases.
- Provides advice and counsel in foreclosure litigation.
- Interviews clients and witnesses, prepares legal documents, conducts research, and negotiates work outs.
- Advises clients of their rights and laws applicable to their case.
- Gathers evidence and develops legal strategies for trials and hearings.
- Files motions, briefs, and appeals with court.
- Coordinates follow-up advocacy with lenders and agencies.
- Ensures proper follow-up with all aspects of cases.
- Coordinates with other attorneys to ensure case coverage.
- Provides legal seminars and workshops.
- Attends appropriate trainings.
- Maintains accurate and comprehensive client files.
- Participates in and coordinates with other housing, foreclosure prevention, and consumer advocates.
- Records all court dates in shared calendar.
- May assist with billing of cases and research and analyze law sources.
- May conduct outreach and deliver subpoenas.
- May follow up with clients and other organizations.
- May recommend and implement strategies to persuade clients to participate in their legal process.
- May represent clients in Housing Court and administrative hearings.
- May advocate on behalf of clients when applications are denied.
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
- Juris Doctor (.) + Licensed to practice law in NY State
Other Requirements:
- Must be in good standing with NY State Bar.
- Knowledge of, and experience in, foreclosure and housing law preferred.
- Ability to analyze complex rent/mortgage breakdowns.
- Ability to converse with clients in a language other than English preferred.
Compensation: $77,000- $120,841 annually
Status: Full-time (35 hours per week)
