Job Summary:
- The Novartis R&D Legal IP team is seeking a Patent Attorney II, Chemistry, to independently handle core and complex patent activities, advise and partner with the business, and contribute to operational and strategic objectives.
- The role can be based in Cambridge, MA or Basel, Switzerland, with a separate application process for European candidates.
- The ideal candidate will have a . degree, admission to a state bar, and registration to practice before the US Patent Office, as well as a Bachelor's degree in biology or equivalent, and 1-2+ years of exposure to the drug discovery and development processes utilized in the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake and lead core and complex patent activities such as drafting and prosecution, patentability and freedom to operate analysis, IP due diligences, litigation, and contract IP terms.
- Manage a patent portfolio for a key product, multiple products, or other strategic assets.
- Utilize expertise in national and foreign patent law and practice.
- Understand and apply other forms of protection related to exclusivity.
- Provide strategic counsel to senior colleagues and key business partners on high value/impact IP-related matters.
- Manage patent and other exclusivity litigation.
- Contribute to the management of budget and application of IP policies and guidelines.
- Report technical complaints, adverse events, and special case scenarios related to Novartis products.
- Distribute marketing samples as applicable.
Requirements:
- . degree with admission to at least one state bar and registered to practice before the US Patent Office.
- Bachelor's degree in biology or equivalent, with a preference for an MS/PhD or equivalent in organic chemistry or pharmaceutical science.
- 7+ years of experience as a patent practitioner in a law firm or in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
- Strong scientific background in biological sciences, including direct lab experience.
- Expertise in US and PCT law, filing process, and prosecution practice, with a detailed understanding of European and other major global patent systems.
- Strong customer-service experience and focus to build and sustain effective partnerships with key stakeholders and project teams.
- Experience integrating global outlook and management of product lifecycle into decision-making process.
Compensation and Benefits:
- The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $185, - $344, USD per year.
- Final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Total compensation package may include a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits.
