Salary Range: $185,000-$197,000

Summary:
The Deputy Executive Assistant General Counsel (Appeals) will provide support to the Deputy General Counsel and manage the appellate practice unit for MTA agencies. This position requires a high level of expertise in tort litigation and appellate practice, as well as knowledge of federal, state, and local laws. The selected candidate will also serve as the lead for legal guidance for senior and mid-level management within the MTA.

Responsibilities:

Manage and direct the tort appellate unit
Handle and manage complex, high-exposure appeals and other litigation matters
Provide legal advice and counsel on complex matters related to tort litigation
Develop and implement defense strategies to protect MTA agencies and achieve favorable resolutions
Coach and counsel in-house attorneys and legal staff
Oversee and manage outside counsel
Stay updated on changes in the law and recommend policies and procedures
Communicate and interact with external departments
Assist in the business goals of the MTA Legal Dept.
Work independently and collaboratively as part of a litigation team
Prepare litigation reports
Perform other duties as assigned by senior management

Education and Experience:

Law degree and admission to the Bar of the State of New York
Minimum of 12 years of progressively independent litigation experience
Minimum of 8 years of managerial/supervisory experience
Minimum of 3 years of specialized Appellate court experience
Admission to . District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and the . Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is desirable
Experience defending municipalities, corporate entities, and/or common carriers preferred

Desired Skills:

Ability to manage a large volume of high-exposure tort cases
Prior supervisory experience
Effective communication skills
Ability to build and maintain professional relationships
Superior skills in case evaluation, litigation strategy, and negotiation
Ability to analyze medical records and technical information
Proficiency in legal and general research
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
