The Director, Assistant General Counsel, Privacy will join our legal team to support Gannett's Business Development, Ad Operations, Marketing, Technology, and Data Privacy teams. This role requires a talented, business-oriented, and dynamic attorney with 7-10 years of experience in practicing law with a top-tier regional or national law firm or in a corporate legal department of a large company. The ideal candidate will have experience in a fast-paced, fluid, and high-performing culture, preferably at a media company, advertising technology company, content service provider, or other company that handles large quantities of consumer data, or a law firm dedicated to servicing such business. This role will report to the Chief Privacy Officer and will be responsible for ensuring the business adheres to data privacy and data security legal obligations, reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a wide variety of agreements, and providing input on new initiatives. The annualized base salary for this role will range between $150,000 and $170,000.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Working in partnership with the Chief Privacy Officer to ensure the business adheres to data privacy and data security legal obligations, including implementing “privacy by design” in new products and offerings.
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a wide variety of agreements, including with streaming media platforms, AI agreements, ad tech platforms, technology/SaaS providers, and data licensing.
- Working with business stakeholders and providing input on new initiatives including strategic alliances, consumer and community engagement projects, and innovative monetization opportunities.
- Reviewing proposed online forms, disclosures, and marketing materials to ensure compliance with international, federal, and state laws and best industry practices.
- Assisting with developing and drafting company policies, compliance guides, and processes, such as privacy policies, acceptable use policies, compliance workflows, and escalation plans.
- Standardizing templates, legal policies, and processes where possible to improve the efficiency of legal services to business units.
To be successful in this role, the candidate should have:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited . law school.
- Active and in good standing with a state bar.
- 7-10 years practicing law with a top-tier regional or national law firm or in a corporate legal department of a large company (or a combination of both).
- Privacy certification required, such as the IAPP CIPP/US, CIPP/E, and/or CIPP/M.
- Experience working on data licensing for use in media.
- Strong legal transactional skills and experience negotiating, drafting, analyzing, and interpreting a wide range of contracts (., SaaS, ad-tech, analytics, strategic alliance, IP, and data licensing).
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; must be able to write in a well-organized, concise, and precise manner.
- Familiarity with privacy regulations such as CCPA and GDPR, and industry self-regulations such as the IAB Frameworks, the Digital Advertising Alliance, and/or Network Advertising Initiative.
- Ability to find creative solutions to help the business get to “yes” while understanding when to flag high-risk issues that need to be escalated.
- Ability to handle a high volume of work with minimal supervision and to assess risk, make decisions, and prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Ability to build strong internal client relationships with personnel of all levels, effectively advise senior-level executives and produce strong client and partner satisfaction through practical and strategic thinking.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $150,000 and $170,000. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience.
