Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks in the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. undertake a variety of responsibilities depending on the court they serve. For the Supreme Court, law clerks work with justices on complex legal cases, conducting legal research, preparing written memoranda, and assisting in drafting opinions. In the Appellate Division, clerks are responsible for researching legal data, analyzing briefs, preparing legal memoranda, processing emergent motion applications, and proofreading published opinions. Trial court law clerks gain practical experience by observing judicial proceedings, attending conferences, receiving mediation training, and summarizing information for judges. Tax Court clerks perform similar duties to those in the Appellate Division and trial courts but do not mediate cases. Additionally, clerks for assignment judges assist with court administration and emergent motions processing.
The responsibilities also include:
- Preparing bench memoranda for civil and criminal motions.
- Conducting legal research to inform judges' opinions and motions.
- Drafting legal orders and case management orders.
- Managing the motion calendar and performing case management functions.
- Assisting with or conducting remote proceedings.
- Communicating with attorneys, self-represented litigants, and court staff.
- Drafting, editing, and proofreading legal correspondence.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants for the law clerk positions must have graduated from a law school approved by the American Bar Association by the time of their appointment. The program targets recent law school graduates, defined as those who have graduated within the last four years. Excellent writing and analytical skills are essential for candidates. Although not mandatory, having completed a course in mediation is beneficial. All trial court law clerks who will serve as mediators must complete the Judiciary-sponsored 12-hour mediation training or an equivalent course.

Salary Information:
The salary for law clerks varies depending on the court served. For the 2024-2025 court term, the annual salaries are as follows:
- Supreme Court: $76,400
- Supreme Court Appellate Division: $69,750
- Superior Court Assignment Judge and Chancery Division (General Equity): $63,950
- Superior Court Law Division (Civil and Criminal) and Chancery Division (Family): $58,900
- Tax Court: $58,900
The salaries for the 2025-2026 court term are subject to determination based on funding availability.
Additional Information:
The Judiciary offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for up to four days per month of remote work. Candidates must have high-speed home internet access and install a multifactor authentication app on their phone or tablet to participate.
Law clerks may hold outside employment with prior approval as provided in the Code of Conduct for Judiciary Employees.
