General Summary:

The Cook County State’s Attorney Office is seeking an entry level Assistant State’s Attorney with 1-5 years of experience in the Criminal Division. The position reports to the Supervisor and Deputy Supervisors of the Criminal Division and is located in various municipal courts and surrounding suburban districts. The salary for this position is $88,434, determined by the Chief of Staff and is non-negotiable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prosecute cases under the Criminal Code of the State of Illinois
• Manage misdemeanor and traffic caseloads, including preliminary hearings, grand jury indictments, and bond hearings
• Work closely with multiple law enforcement agencies and represent the People of the State of Illinois in hearings and trials
• Communicate the mission and values of the CCSAO to members of the community
• Prepare misdemeanor and traffic cases for disposition
• Litigate motions, petitions, bench and jury trials
• Work with witnesses and victims to prepare for testimony
• Work independently and as part of a team, including courtroom personnel

Minimum Qualifications:

• Law degree (.) from an accredited law school
• Member in good standing with the Illinois bar, or eligible for admission to Illinois bar on Motion (reciprocity)
• 1 or more years of criminal law experience
• Excellent legal research and legal writing abilities
• Ability to articulate sound legal arguments both orally and in writing
• Strong work ethic and attention to detail
• Able to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3 or more years of criminal practice
• 1-2 years of prosecutorial practice
• 1-2 years trial experience at the misdemeanor or felony level

Working Environment:

The Assistant State’s Attorney will be assigned to cover geographical areas in Cook County and will be prosecuting under the Criminal Code of the State of Illinois. This position requires managing misdemeanor and traffic caseloads, as well as working closely with law enforcement agencies and representing the People of the State of Illinois in hearings and trials. The ideal candidate must be able to communicate effectively with diverse communities and work independently.

Physical Requirements:

This position involves light work, which may require lifting up to 20 pounds and frequent walking or standing. The ability to perform a full range of light work is necessary for this role.
