Job Title: Attorney General’s Honors Program Participant

Job Responsibilities:
Participants in the Attorney General's Honors Program are involved in various legal activities and responsibilities. They will have the opportunity to:

- Rotate through one or more specialized subject matter areas, including but not limited to Antitrust, Civil Rights, Conviction Review, Cyber Crimes, Environmental Justice and Enforcement, and more.
- Work on nationally significant matters in collaboration with the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, and multistate coalitions, particularly in the Antitrust area.
- Formulate policy and legal strategy, investigate cases, draft legal pleadings, negotiate with opposing counsel, and argue in court or before administrative bodies.
- Attend workshops and trainings to develop legal skills and gain exposure to the work performed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
- Potentially rotate between different assignments during their second year and work with the Attorney General’s Executive Leadership Team on priority programs and policy development.

Education and Experience Information:
Eligibility for the Attorney General’s Honors Program is extended to:

- Third-year law students.
- Students in the final year of other graduate law programs (such as LLM programs).
- Judicial clerks who will complete their clerkship by September 2025, having begun the clerkship immediately following graduation from law school or a fellowship program.
- Individuals who will complete a fellowship by September 2025, which began immediately following graduation from law school or clerkship.

Applicants must submit a writing sample, statement of interest, resume, law school transcript, and two professional references. Selected participants will begin work in September 2025.

Salary Information:
The starting salary for Honors Program participants depends on their admission status to the New Jersey bar at the time of employment:

- If admitted to the New Jersey bar at the start date, participants will begin as Deputy Attorneys General with an annual salary of $93,.
- If not yet admitted to the bar, participants will be hired as Law Clerks at an annual salary of $59,494. Upon admission to the New Jersey bar, they will be promoted to Deputy Attorney General with an annual salary of $93,.

All participants, whether Deputy Attorneys General or Law Assistants, are entitled to employment benefits, including health and dental insurance. Honors Program attorneys assigned to the Division of Law receive union membership privileges.

Application Process:
- Applicants must submit an online application by October 13, 2024, including a writing sample, statement of interest, resume, and law school transcript.
- Applicants are not required to submit letters of recommendation but must identify at least two professional references, including one law professor or other legal academic.
- Applicants may select from 16 subject matter areas and rank their preferences. They are also asked to indicate their interest in litigation, investigations, and regulatory policy, and their preference for civil or criminal law.

Selection Process:
- All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprising senior attorneys in the Attorney General’s Office.
- Candidates will be selected based on academic achievement, legal writing and research skills, demonstrated interest in public service, and leadership in school or community activities.
- Selected candidates will be invited for virtual or in-person interviews in Newark or Trenton in October – November 2024. Offers will be extended in January – February 2025.

Commitments and Requirements:
- Participants must commit to two years of service with the Attorney General’s Office and undergo a background check before starting employment.
- Within six months of starting, participants must become members of the New Jersey Bar, which may require passing the New Jersey bar exam.
- Within 12 months of starting, participants must establish New Jersey residency or obtain an exemption as required under the New Jersey First Act.
