The Deputy General Counsel & Chief of Federal Affairs will also be responsible for the following duties:
- Providing legal counsel and support to the General Counsel and Chief of Staff, Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other senior management
- Assisting in major or routine legal actions as assigned by the General Counsel and Chief of Staff
- Managing and coordinating all federal affairs for the organization, including interactions with the federal government and external organizations
- Supervising legal staff in consulting with internal departments and divisions
- Supporting workforce planning and organizational performance management
- Overseeing priority projects and outcomes for the organization
- Acting as a liaison with outside legal counsel on organization business
- Reviewing and providing counsel on contractual obligations related to the organization's work
- Performing administrative and management functions, including staff management and strategic planning
The ideal candidate for this position would have the following qualifications and experience:
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to a state bar and in good standing
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in a legal setting, preferably in federal Indian law or a related field
- Experience in managing and leading a legal team
- Strong understanding of federal Indian law and policy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including tribal governments, federal agencies, and external organizations
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously
- Knowledge of workforce planning and organizational performance management
