As a law clerk, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of legal cases and issues, gaining valuable experience and making a positive impact in the civil justice system. With a focus on housing preservation, BayLegal works to prevent homelessness, address housing discrimination, and preserve affordable housing in counties such as Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco, and Santa Clara.

JOB TITLE: Law Clerk
SALARY: Dependent on funding and experience
EXPERIENCE:

BayLegal's Priority Areas:

- Housing Preservation in Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco, and Santa Clara counties
- Fighting homelessness
- Addressing housing discrimination issues
- Preserving affordable housing
- Fighting illegal evictions

Responsibilities:
- Conducting client interviews and preparing legal pleadings
- Assisting with full civil litigation cases, including jury trials
- Obtaining discovery and other evidence
- Writing briefs and legal memoranda
- Participating in community outreach and education
- Representing clients at administrative hearings and state court hearings/trials
- Drafting writs of mandamus to Superior Court and California appellate court

- Passion for social justice and poverty-related issues
- Sensitivity to working with people from diverse backgrounds

Desired Skills and Abilities:
- Completion of Evidence Course and certification by California State Bar to represent clients in court
- Fluency in Spanish, Cantonese, Russian, Vietnamese, or other Southeast Asian languages
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income or disadvantaged communities

Funding:
- Students are encouraged to apply for funding through their law school and other grant opportunities

- Law clerkships available throughout the school year
- Applications accepted on an ongoing basis for semester clerkships
- For 2025 summer clerkships, BayLegal will begin reviewing applications in mid-October and recommend applying before February 2025
- Summer program is nine weeks from early June to early August
