Overview

The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is currently accepting applications for its Law School Internship Program for Summer 2025. This 10-week internship program offers students the opportunity to work in an award-winning municipal law office that is nationally recognized for its excellence. The City Attorney's Office practices civil law and provides high-quality legal advice to policymakers and vigorously represents the City in civil litigation. As a legal intern, you will gain practical knowledge and experience in municipal law and government affairs while working with experienced attorneys on a variety of legal assignments.

Responsibilities

- Work on legal assignments under the direction and supervision of deputy city attorneys
- Attend client meetings, trials, court hearings, and depositions
- Participate in public meetings and closed sessions with city commissions and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
- Assist with press conferences related to the Office's work
- Attend events, tours, and lectures organized by the Office for interns
- Complete a brief legal writing sample

Qualifications

- Currently enrolled in an accredited law school
- Able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week during the spring and fall, and 20 hours per week in the summer
- Interested in municipal law and government affairs
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong research, writing, and communication skills

We offer clinical, volunteer, and work-study internships during the spring, summer, and fall. Volunteer internships are unpaid, while clinical internships may be unpaid if approved by your law school. Work-study internships require federal work-study funds and a current work-study contract between your law school and the City.

- Do you offer internships to law school graduates waiting for bar results?
No, the program is only open to current law school students.

- What is the internship program schedule?
Most internships run for 10 weeks, but we can accommodate interns for 8-14 weeks. The spring internship typically runs from mid-January to mid-April, the summer internship from early June to early August, and the fall internship from early September to early November.

- What are the minimum requirements?
Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited law school and able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week during the spring and fall, and 20 hours per week in the summer.

- What type of training will I receive?
Interns will attend an office orientation and receive training on how to use the computer network. Each practice team also provides training for interns to complete their assignments. The office's continuing legal education seminars are also open to interns.

- What type of relationship can I expect to have with the deputy city attorneys?
The office encourages deputies to mentor interns and provide feedback. Interns typically work closely with 2-3 attorneys and have an intern coordinator who oversees their workload and provides feedback.

- What type of supervision will I have?
Each practice team has an intern coordinator who runs intern meetings, distributes assignments, and provides feedback. Interns will also work directly with other deputies on the team.

- What type of activities will I be able to participate in and observe?
Interns may attend Board, committee, and client meetings, trials, and depositions when appropriate. The office also schedules events, tours, and lectures for interns each season, which may include tours of city facilities and insider views of the courts.
