The Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) is seeking attorneys to join their team and represent children and parents in family regulation cases. CPCS is the public defender agency for Massachusetts and provides legal representation for those who cannot afford an attorney. The Children and Family Law Division (CAFL) specifically handles family regulation matters, including care and protection proceedings, children requiring assistance cases, termination of parental rights, guardianship-of-a-minor cases, and any other child custody proceeding involving the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

We are looking for attorneys who are passionate about fighting for equal justice and human dignity, and who are dedicated to supporting their clients in achieving their legal and life goals. Our values include courage, accountability, respect, and excellence. We also have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and strive to maintain a work climate that is respectful and supports the success of all staff members.

As a Trial Attorney in the CAFL office, you will play a critical role in cases that affect families. Your advocacy may mean the difference between a family being reunited or the termination of parental rights, which is often referred to as the "death penalty of family law." You will also have the opportunity to secure special education services for teenagers in truancy cases, and fight for siblings to be placed in a permanent home where they can stay together.

Our agency provides a nationally recognized, comprehensive, skills-based training course for new Trial Attorneys to ensure they are prepared to represent their clients to the best of their abilities. We also offer continuing legal education programs for both new and experienced Trial Attorneys to ensure they are up to date on the law and have the necessary skills to provide zealous representation.

To apply for this position, you must be committed to serving a culturally diverse, low-income population and be eligible to practice law in Massachusetts. This can include being a member of the Massachusetts bar, a recent law school graduate under Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:03, or an attorney licensed in another jurisdiction who is covered by Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:04. Fluency in a foreign language is desirable, and trial experience in termination of parental rights cases is preferred.

As a Trial Attorney, your responsibilities will include interviewing clients, conducting legal research and writing, and preparing for and conducting trials. You will also work with a legal team, including social workers and paralegals, to ensure the best possible outcome for your clients.

CPCS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, sex, disability, religion, age, veteran or military status, genetic information, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We are committed to providing a work environment that is respectful and supports the success of all staff members. If you have any questions about equal employment opportunity or require reasonable accommodations, please contact our Chief Human Resources Officer.

If you are interested in joining our team and making a difference in the lives of children and families, please submit a resume and personal mission statement detailing your interest in the position, your personal qualities, background, and skills, and what you hope to achieve in your work. We are currently filling positions as our budgets allow, and these positions have an expected start date in early September 2025.
