Job Summary:
The SALT Manager, Unclaimed Property/Escheat is responsible for advising clients on tax implications and other accounting matters related to their business objectives, with a focus on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This role requires a unique combination of tax and accounting skills, with a focus on project management, reconciliation, financial auditing, problem solving, internal controls, and process/system enhancement. The SALT Manager will also be responsible for project management, client presentations, coordinating compliance, audit defense, voluntary disclosure agreements, and other consulting engagements. They will also be involved in marketing, networking, and business development, as well as staying up-to-date on changes in unclaimed property policy and applying new policies to compliance and consulting engagements. The SALT Manager will work closely with Core Tax and Audit Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide expertise to clients.
Job Duties:
Research:
Identify complex situations requiring research and conduct thorough research using appropriate sources
Analyze researched facts and sources before composing a detailed report
Develop relationships with relevant state tax authorities and stay updated on changes in unclaimed property laws and regulations
Unclaimed Property Compliance:
Obtain and manipulate data from clients to prepare annual escheat returns
Use FSI Track, BDO Global Portal, and other systems for data gathering
Import data into FSI Track and prepare returns
Identify applicable exemptions and deferrals
Perform reconciliations on data gathered and reported
Respond to notices from state authorities
Assist with due diligence letter processing
Assist with client payment processing
Provide support during audits
Communicate regularly with clients and UP team members
Unclaimed Property Consulting:
Draft memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various escheat issues
Develop escheat planning processes
Create policies and procedures and address internal controls
Represent clients during unclaimed property audits and voluntary disclosures, mitigating exposures and providing best practices
Identify and implement gift card planning opportunities
Conduct client interviews, onsite visits, and develop workplans
Review general ledger detail, banking records, and other relevant data for escheat items
Prepare and review analyses of sporadic data into unclaimed property templates
Assist clients with remediation procedures and develop exposure quantification models
Review client refund processes
Apply appropriate state tax consulting specialties and collaborate with other professionals when necessary
Ensure engagement letters are adopted and manage engagements
Assist in developing sales strategies
Achieve a $250k - $350k+ annual business development goal
Generate 3-5 new business leads annually
Regularly update CRM entries
Participate in relevant trade organizations, public speaking, and networking events
Manage client expectations and oversee and project manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously
Unclaimed Property Controversy:
Represent clients during disputes with tax authorities
Unclaimed Property Related Software:
Utilize FSI Track, tax research databases, and other relevant software for assigned tasks
Maintain knowledge of various GL systems
Participate in learning and implementing technology enhancements for the unclaimed property group
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise SALT Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and review work product
Ensure team members are trained on relevant software
Evaluate performance and assist in setting goals for professional development
Provide feedback and complete evaluations for team members
Act as a Career Advisor for team members
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree, focus in Accounting preferred
Experience:
5+ years of experience in tax, financial statement auditing, internal auditing, or forensic accounting in a public accounting firm or in-house organization
Prior supervisory experience required
License/Certifications:
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a . jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (or equivalent), required
Software:
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word
Experience with Power BI, Alteryx, and other software preferred
