While New Hampshire law permits students who have completed their second year of law school to appear in court, some law school programs require that students receive special permission from the court. NHPD has been successful in obtaining such permission for interns from outside of New Hampshire.
NHPD does not have a formal summer associate program for law students between their first and second year of law school. However, if you are a first year law student and are interested in volunteering with NHPD, please Summer Legal Intern (2L) - Office: State-Wide
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is seeking highly motivated law students who have completed their second year of law school for its 2025 Summer Internship Program. This is a ten-week, full-time program that offers students the opportunity to obtain certification to appear in New Hampshire's circuit and superior courts. As an intern at NHPD, you will be treated like a lawyer and have the opportunity to handle cases from start to finish, including conducting arraignments and bail hearings, litigating motions, conducting bench trials, and representing clients in court. You will also have the chance to work closely with staff attorneys and investigators, gaining valuable experience in a busy public defender's office.
NHPD is looking for interns who are not only bright and talented, but also deeply committed to our mission of providing effective, client-centered representation to indigent criminal defendants. This internship is unpaid, but most interns are able to secure outside grants or school funding. All job-related expenses will be reimbursed by NHPD. Please note that interns must have a driver's license and access to an insured vehicle.
If you are a law student in your second year and are interested in gaining hands-on experience in criminal defense, we encourage you to apply for our 2025 Summer Legal Internship Program. This is a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of what it's like to be a public defender and potentially secure a staff attorney position at NHPD in the future.
