A law firm in Alexandria, VA is seeking a Chemical Patent Attorney with 1-5 years of patent prosecution experience to join its intellectual property team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the chemical field and experience in patent drafting. The role offers opportunities for increasing levels of responsibility and potential movement into other areas of the firm’s IP practice.
Duties:
- Draft and prosecute chemical patents, including preparing patent applications and responses to office actions.
- Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.
- Advise clients on patent strategy, including patent portfolio management and protection.
- Handle all aspects of patent prosecution, from initial filing through to issuance.
- Work closely with inventors to understand and document inventions.
- Conduct prior art searches and analyze prior art references.
- Represent clients before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
- Collaborate with other attorneys and support staff on complex patent issues.
- Stay current with developments in patent law and the chemical industry.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with clients and industry contacts.
Requirements:
- At least 1-5 years of patent prosecution experience in a law firm.
- Strong background in the chemical field, including knowledge of chemical processes and compounds.
- Proven experience in patent drafting and prosecution.
- Familiarity with patent law, USPTO procedures, and related legal standards.
- Ability to manage multiple cases and prioritize tasks effectively.
Education & Certifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
- A degree in chemistry or a closely related field is preferred.
