This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with a Housing Supervisor and gain valuable experience while awaiting New York Bar admission. As a member of the Tenant Defense team, you will handle a diverse range of tenant representation cases at the trial and appellate levels, including holdovers, nonpayment proceedings, administrative hearings, and affirmative litigation in state and federal courts. You will also have the opportunity to work with tenant associations, organizers, community-based organizations, partner legal services agencies, and pro bono lawyers. Responsibilities: - Represent and advocate for clients in court proceedings, administrative hearings, and affirmative litigation at the city, state, and federal levels - Conduct intake at courthouses and off-site locations, potentially during evening hours - Provide training, community outreach, and education to individuals, local organizations, and housing advocates - Advocate for policy changes to advance the interests of clients before legislative, administrative, and judicial bodies - Promote the work of The Legal Aid Society and the Civil Practice in the community - Collaborate with other organizations, pro bono lawyers, and partners - Maintain a full caseload of clients - May require some weekend and night advocacy - Other duties as assigned Qualifications: - Current 3L students who will graduate or did graduate in Spring 2025 and will sit for the New York Bar Exam in July 2025 or its equivalent - Post-graduate Fellows or Clerks who took the first available bar exam are eligible to apply - Winter 2024 graduates sitting for the first available New York Bar Exam or its equivalent are also eligible - Demonstrated commitment to serving historically excluded communities and understanding the impact of race, gender, class, and intersectionality on client outcomes - Relevant clinical program, internship, or work experience preferred - Excellent written, analytical, organizational, and oral advocacy skills - Creative, flexible, and highly motivated - Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and manage a high volume of cases - Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required H3: Take the First Step in Your Legal Career with The Legal Aid Society At The Legal Aid Society, we believe in attracting and retaining exceptional talent who are committed to serving our clients.
