Job Overview:
A law firm seeks an experienced Litigation Attorney to join its Personal Injury department in Los Angeles, CA. This position involves working closely with the firm's Workers' Compensation and other departments to handle all aspects of litigation. The attorney will be responsible for managing a diverse caseload, overseeing litigation procedures from filing to trial, and ensuring effective communication with clients and staff. The role requires strong litigation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Duties:
- Manage approximately 60 litigation cases with support from assigned staff and case managers.
- Oversee and direct pre-litigation and litigation investigations.
- Maintain regular communication with clients, providing updates on case status and strategy.
- Evaluate cases for potential resolution and establish litigation plans through trial.
- Retain and prepare medical and legal experts for trial and depositions.
- Supervise support staff, including litigation secretaries and paralegals.
- Conduct legal research on relevant issues throughout the course of litigation.
- Draft and file complaints, propound and respond to discovery, and manage law and motion matters.
- Prepare clients for depositions and hearings, including minors' compensation hearings.
- Represent clients in depositions, mediations, and other court proceedings.
- Prepare cases for trial, including motions in limine, witness examination outlines, and other trial documents.
- Participate in monthly file reviews with the team to ensure progress and strategy alignment.
- Assist associate attorneys with trial preparation and conduct jury trials as needed.
Requirements:
- Active knowledge of medical and legal experts, mediators, and court procedures.
- Experience negotiating medical liens and understanding health insurance matters, including Medi-Cal and Medicare.
- Ability to identify and assess "high value" and "low value" cases and make informed decisions on litigation strategy.
- Familiarity with filing suits in small claims, limited, and unlimited jurisdictions.
- Strong understanding of case management, including medical report reviews and client communication.
Education:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Certifications:
- Active membership in the California State Bar (required).
Skills:
- Strong litigation and trial advocacy skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Familiarity with Employment Law and Workers’ Compensation terminology.
- Ability to manage multiple cases in a fast-paced environment.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred).
- Strong interpersonal and social skills, with compassion for clients requiring legal services.
