Staff Attorney: Protect Civil Rights and Promote Justice for American Muslims in Newark, NJ Experience the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of American Muslims and join a dynamic and growing team at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), America’s largest Islamic civil liberties and advocacy group. As a Staff Attorney at CAIR-NJ, you will have the chance to work on impactful cases and advocate for the rights of American Muslims in a variety of areas, including policing, employment discrimination, and school bullying. About CAIR: CAIR has 35 offices and chapters nationwide and is dedicated to enhancing the understanding of Islam, encouraging dialogue, protecting civil liberties, empowering American Muslims, and building coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. The demand for our services has grown tremendously, and the need for CAIR in New Jersey is great. CAIR-NJ strives to ensure that Muslims in New Jersey enjoy the same protections as all Americans. Job Title: Staff Attorney Reports to: Senior Staff Attorney or Executive Director Schedule Type: Full-time (Hybrid Schedule) Location: Newark, NJ Compensation: Annual Salary of $65,000 – $80,000, commensurate with experience Fully paid health insurance for employee Up to 3% IRA matching contribution 12 paid holidays, 12 days paid vacation, 5 sick days, and 7 personal days per year Duties/Responsibilities: Coordinate legal intake process, case selection, and referral Conduct legal research and draft legal documents Participate in alternative dispute resolution Work strategically with a CAIR-NJ Senior Attorney, paralegal, and Executive Director Participate in all aspects of CAIR-NJ litigation Participate in legislative advocacy Conduct community education and outreach Assist in the production of reports Build and maintain relationships with clients, communities, and other key stakeholders Required Qualifications: . degree with admission in good standing with the NJ Bar Highly motivated and self-starting Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills Proficiency with legal research and familiarity with legal search engines Demonstrated leadership and ability to work independently and collaboratively Commitment to advancing the rights of marginalized communities Experience writing claim letters Experience in organizing and/or working in coalition spaces Preferred Supplemental Qualifications: Bilingual skills Working knowledge of New Jersey Muslim community Experience with employment discrimination law Experience with civil rights law Knowledge of state legislative processes and structure Commitment to the mission: Passion for the mission of CAIR, including a strong commitment to securing civil rights and justice for American Muslims and their families Interpersonal skills: Independent and self-motivated Ability to work fluidly with staff and community members Able to adapt to different cultural norms and backgrounds Comfortable in a fast-paced and changing environment Writing and analytical skills: Superb writing skills Ability to analyze individual circumstances and determine the best path forward Other Benefits: Access to mentors and annual legal training Excellent Islamic work environment Hybrid remote/in-person work schedule How To Apply: All interested and eligible candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting a cover letter, resume, three references, answers to application questions, and a legal writing sample of no more than ten pages.
