This is a full-time, exempt position with excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans. The Assistant City Attorney will provide a wide range of legal services to the City Council, City departments, and various boards and commissions.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provides legal advice and counsel to the City Council, City departments, and various boards and commissions on a wide range of municipal government operations, including civil and public agency law.
- Conducts legal research, prepares opinions and reports, and represents the City in a variety of litigation.
- Assists in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the City Attorney's office.
- Monitors legal developments and evaluates their impact on City operations.
- Prepares and reviews legal documents and instruments, including ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and leases.
- Investigates and prepares reports on claims and complaints against the City.
- Represents the City in court cases and administrative hearings.
- Advises the City on employee relations, discipline, and labor relations matters.
- Prepares technical and administrative reports and studies.
- Serves as Acting City Attorney as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

- A Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the California Bar Association.
- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of civil or municipal law, with prior civil litigation experience preferred.
- Current membership in good standing with the California State Bar Association.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Advanced knowledge of civil and public agency law, including The Brown Act, Political Reform Practices Act, Public Records Act, California Claims Act, land use, CEQA, public contracting, personnel, labor, workers compensation, and tort law.
- Knowledge of ordinances, statutes, and court decisions related to municipal operations.
- Ability to conduct legal research, analyze problems, and evaluate alternatives to make sound recommendations.
- Ability to represent the City effectively in court cases and administrative hearings.
- Knowledge of municipal government organizational structure and functional responsibilities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Education and Experience:

- A Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the California Bar Association.
- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of civil or municipal law, with prior civil litigation experience preferred.

Licenses and Certificates:

- Possession of an appropriate, valid Driver's License from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Must be a current member in good standing of the California State Bar Association.

Working Conditions:

- Work in a standard office environment with extensive public . Candidates considered to be among the most qualified will be required to participate in a qualification appraisal testing process. This may include oral interviews, assessment exercises, and physical exercises. Passing scores will determine placement on an established eligible list. Eligible lists last approximately 2 years unless abolished sooner.
