Responsibilities:
Advise clients on a wide range of employee benefits and executive compensation matters, including qualified retirement plans, ESOPs, nonqualified deferred compensation plans, equity compensation, employment tax, welfare benefits, M&A transactions, IRS and DOL audits and investigations, executive employment agreements, and related ERISA and benefits matters.
Proactively build and maintain relationships with clients and other attorneys within the Firm.
Help grow the ESOPs, Benefits & Compensation team’s capabilities and client base.
Stay current on industry trends and developments, as well as changes in laws and regulations relevant to employee benefits and executive compensation.
Collaborate with colleagues and other departments within the Firm to provide comprehensive and coordinated legal services to clients.
Manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
Assist with the development and implementation of client training programs and materials.
Qualifications:
Two or more years of direct experience with employee benefits and executive compensation, preferably in a law firm environment.
Experience with private-company ESOPs is preferred but not required.
Strong academic record and excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and proactively, as well as collaboratively with colleagues and clients.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Commitment to providing excellent client service and building long-term relationships with clients.
Knowledge of ERISA, tax, and other relevant laws and regulations.
Ability to analyze complex legal and business issues and provide practical and creative solutions.
Willingness to work in any of the Firm’s office locations.
Admission to the Virginia or North Carolina Bar (or ability to become licensed and remain in good standing).

- Education: Juris Doctor (.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school

Law firm Kaufman & Canoles is seeking an experienced Employee Benefits Associate to join their highly collaborative ESOPs, Benefits & Compensation team.
